Environmental Justice

C&L Sustainability, founded by sibling environmental activists Carmen and Liam Kang, advances environmental justice through a bottom-up, place-based approach that recognizes environmental challenges as inherently local. While climate change is global, environmental justice issues—including access to clean air, safe food, public health, land use, and environmental risk—are shaped by local histories, geographies, and communities; effective solutions must therefore emerge from the ground up.

In many cities with the most capable problem-solvers—researchers, community organizers, students, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and cultural leaders—often work in close proximity yet remain siloed, even while addressing overlapping environmental justice challenges. This fragmentation limits collective impact and slows the development of solutions that are both equitable and scalable.

Our mission is to practice commoning: intentionally creating shared spaces where diverse actors can meet, exchange knowledge, and collaborate across disciplines and sectors. By introducing practitioners to one another and fostering trust-based relationships, we enable collective action that generates innovative, locally grounded solutions.

These solutions are not designed as one-size-fits-all models. Instead, they serve as living examples—approaches that other communities can adapt, learn from, and evolve according to their own local needs. Through this process, C&L Sustainability helps transform isolated efforts into interconnected ecosystems of action, advancing environmental justice one community at a time.
